Ketone controversy deepens as UCI faces criticism from clean cycling group

What are ketones? Why is ketone important for the cyclists?

Ketones are fuel molecules made by the liver when the body starts using stored fat instead of glucose for energy. This usually happens during long gaps without food, strict low-carb eating, or extended physical activity, and they provide an extra energy source for the muscles and the brain. Ketones can be useful for cyclists because they give the body another source of energy instead of relying only on carbohydrates. They help save muscle glycogen, support fat usage, and may speed up recovery after tough rides. Ketones allow muscles to work for longer without depending fully on limited carb stores and help the body adapt and repair itself better after hard exercise, improving overall training response.

And this one became a major issue made by the Cycling group so, let’s start what is the reason behind in this controversy.

Cycling’s professional scene is once again under the spotlight, this time due to the heavy use of ketone supplements. The clean-sport organisation  Mouvement Pour un Cyclisme Crédible  (MPCC) has sharply criticised the Union Cyclist Internationale (UCI) for not addressing the situation properly, arguing that the ongoing silence has created confusion and uncertainty throughout the peloton. MPCC said the UCI has taken far too long to publish the findings from the studies it ordered, calling the delay unacceptable and damaging to the sport. The group demanded a clear decision, insisting that the governing body must either fully allow ketone use or prohibit it altogether. MPCC also claimed that the promised impact review, announced months earlier, could now be pushed back to the end of 2025, which they see as an unreasonable delay given the concerns around rider safety and the credibility of cycling. While pressure continues to grow, the UCI has still not introduced a formal ban, but by October 2025 it had officially advised against using ketone product. https://cyclinguptodate.com/cycling/uci-rules-out-ketone-ban-but-warns-riders-theres-no-reason-for-them-to-be-used
