Transporting your bike on an Airline or Railways in India

When cycling becomes essential to your daily routine, you can’t miss riding when you travel to different places. You would be happy to carry it along with you and explore the new city for a few days of your stay. It becomes more imperative if you on a holiday, you can definately wander around hill stations, beaches or any happening places in the holiday destination.

That is not only reason to bring your bike along with you. In case of your employment change or you move to new city completly, you can take your love with you. 

The question is how easy it is to transport a bike and how to transport it to another city. Here is some recommendation for Indian cyclists for domestic tranfers.

Pack it well. Find a suitable cycle bag or box.

Before you wish to transport it, you need a proper packing stuff for the bike. Generally cycle bags are great to have if you need to travel frequently between different cities; however, the original carton box would be sufficient to do that job for single or a less often transportation. 

These carton boxes are cheaper alternatives, 1/10 of the cycle bag or even lesser and it is easy to find at a cycle store. You may just visit to the store and ask for a cycle box that was used to carry new bike for that store. Isn’t that easy to find it.

On top of this, you can locate bubble wraping material, which is also easily available in the market for your shifter, crank and Derailers safety. Believe me you don’t need much of it. You might ask for thermacol packing from the store however i personallly prefer the bubble wrapping the entire bike to avoid any scratches on the way. You can remove the wheels, unlock the handle bar and put it together in the box with properly wrapped manner and don’t forget to mark fergile on the box.

Find a transportation medium, Airline, train or truck

Generally if you are travelling at a less distance, you can carry this in your car that you can hire for the trip. This will save cost for you. But, in other scenerio, airlines and train (railways) are better way to carry it.

All airlines accept all sizes bags while your travel. You can expect the extra charges for luggage as the size of the bag will remain bigger than usual. The charge wont effect you as this is not very high. The charges might vary as per the arilines.

Alternatively, you can carry the cycle in the train, however you need to take permission to bring that big size equipement with you on a train boggie. This is easy and does not need much effort. In this scenerio, you need to reach the parcel office 2-3 hours in advance with your confirmed ticket and book the parcel with you.

These are two simple yet effective ways to ride your own bike in different cities without compromising the joy of riding.
