The world of cycling consists of different formats of races as per form-factors and road type. The two most popular cycling race format of cycling is known as Road Cycling Race & Mountain Cycling Race. There is a huge variety in a racing event. Let’s have a look
- Road Racing: It’s the most popular cycling race type which is generally conducted on the road surface. Road racing is generally a long-distance race where individuals or a team competes against each other.
- Track Cycling: These are short-distance indoor racing events. In this race, format cyclists compete against each other comparatively at a short but high-speed race. The races are conducted inside a velodrome. Track racing makes cycling sport lucrative indoor sport.
- Mountain Bike Racing: These races are held off of paved terrain and mostly organized on hills therefore commonly known as mountain racing.
- Cyclo-Cross: in this racing format, a cyclist goes through a variety of racing conditions, road, off-road, and sometimes one has to carry the cycle on the shoulder to overcome the obstacles. The entire route of the cyclo-cross race consists of pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills, and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount, carry the bike while navigating the obstruction, and remount.
- BMX: When it comes to speed and maneuverability off-road and within confined boundaries, BMX events the best to see thrilling adventure. An other format of BMX cycling is called BMX Freestyle where as maneuverability is the key to the competition.
- Time Trials: An individual time trial (ITT) is a road bicycle race in which cyclists race alone against the time. In another format team time trial (TTT), where a team’s win relies on each other strength and endurance. These races are generally conducted on flat roads or inside velodromes. The track-based time trails are the most popular format of the race.
- Cycle Speedway: These races are usually held on outdoor dirt tracks making it a shorter yet thrilling competition. Sometimes these are called Dirt Track Racing.
Of course, there is more to cycling than these. Although professionally the above mentioned are the recognized cycling formats however bikepacking, endurance racing, and other mixed cycle events are conducted in a different part of the world.
