What Is ADAC Cyclassics, and When Did This Famous Race Begin?

The Hamburg Cyclassics, now called the ADAC Cyclassics, is a well-known one-day cycling race held every year in and around Hamburg, Germany. While the route changes from time to time, the race usually covers about 250 kilometres. The most challenging part of the course is the Waseberg hill in Blankenese, which riders climb three times in the final phase of the race, and which often decides the outcome.

First held in 1996, the race quickly grew in importance and became a regular fixture on the international cycling calendar. It was Germany’s only UCI World Tour one-day race for many years and has attracted some of the sport’s biggest names. A key highlight of the event is the Jedermannrennen (“Everyman’s race”), an amateur race held on the same day and roads, allowing thousands of cycling fans to take part. With distances ranging from 55 km to 155 km, it has become one of the largest and most popular cycling events in Germany.
